Associate Spotlight: Matt Born - Senior Director, Corporate Controller

Quarterra Senior Director, Corporate Controller Matt Born loves to embrace the unknown, whether it’s relocating to a city he’s only visited once or his positive outlook on the company’s future. But how much is known about Matt’s role at Quarterra or the path that led him to us? Let’s get to know a little more about this outdoor enthusiast and his Quarterra experience.

What is your official title and job description?

My title is Senior Director, Corporate Controller. My main responsibilities are to oversee our corporate accounting team and external financial reporting.

What is your Quarterra story (how did you land at Quarterra)?

It started with a simple LinkedIn message I sent to Quarterra’s Chief Accounting Officer. Having never heard of the “word” Quarterra, I was intrigued and did a quick Google search. A handful of conversations and interviews later, I joined almost a year ago. I knew Quarterra would be a perfect fit.

Tell us your favorite thing about working at Quarterra?

Besides the clear and obvious answer of the people and culture, my favorite thing about working here is the constant opportunity to design… and redesign. Quarterra being a (relatively) small and new organization has afforded me the opportunity to not only think about today’s needs but also think about how we can best position the company for the future to meet Quarterra stakeholders’ financial information needs, both internal and external.

Pursue the future. I value the feeling that EVERYONE at Quarterra has a voice and can make an impact on our future as a company.

What are you most looking forward to in Quarterra’s future?

I am looking forward to continuing to embrace the unknown. I am convinced today more so than ever (during my relatively short time here) that Quarterra has a big and bright future. It may take a little longer than we all expected but I do believe that good things come to those who wait.

Bio/Quarterra Accolades:

I spent my first 30-plus years in the “great” state of Illinois. I graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a degree in accounting. After graduating, I spent 10-plus years in the Chicago office at PwC as an auditor (some will think that is an eternity in public accounting). About six years ago, my wife and I decided it was time to try another state and reluctantly moved to Charlotte, having visited only once before and ruling out other cities. As a nod to embracing the unknown, I tell anyone that will listen it was a fantastic decision for us and we do not want to leave (especially now that I am part Quarterra). My wife and I live just outside of Charlotte in Matthews, NC and have a dog named Henley, whose breed is a Lagotto Romagnolo (yes, that is an actual breed). When not at Quarterra or chasing the dog around, I try to find every opportunity to be in the mountains, whether here in NC or out west hiking, skiing or fly fishing.
