As a dedicated team member and proven leader, Marshall Farrell is the epitome of what LMC values in its people. His commitment to his job and fellow colleagues has positioned him not only as a key player in the multifamily industry, but also as an integral part of the LMC company culture.
After graduation, Marshall spent time as an investment analyst before he decided to change lanes and join LMC in 2014. Since joining LMC, Marshall has served in various development roles in the Chicago and Atlanta offices, overseeing numerous developments from conception to lease-up, and everything in between.
In late 2019, Marshall had his homecoming to Charlotte where now serves as the senior development manager for the Carolinas division of LMC’s operations and remains a devoted fan of his alma mater, Ohio State University.
What is your official title and job description?
I currently serve as the Vice President of Development in the Carolinas division. My responsibilities include managing all phases of the development process – from site selection through community lease-up and everything in between. Essentially, anything that has to do with the development side of LMC, I’ll be jumping in to help.
What is your favorite part of your job?
It’s easily the people. We are a people-oriented business. Our communities are designed and planned by people, built by people and managed by people who have an immense passion for serving the residents in those communities. Being in a position in which I get to wear many hats, I am fortunate to be able to work with a wide variety of individuals who I can learn from and also have fun with. Working in a team setting is a joy for me, and this is the best team I could ask for.
Tell us about the region you work in – what makes it so attractive for a future LMC resident?
With a relatively low cost of living, good climate, business-friendly environment, strong employment rates and a diverse geography, there really is something for everyone in the Carolinas. Charlotte is the second largest financial center in the country, and while Raleigh-Durham is one of the fastest growing tech hubs, Charleston and Asheville are two of America’s best cities for tourism. Additionally, you’re only a short drive to the beach or mountains, which makes for a nice day trip to get away.
Why is it so important to be a good development neighbor? And how do you make sure you are a good example of this?
It is the most important thing we do. While the development life cycle is only three to four years, and in some cases longer, our communities have impacts that last well beyond the development process. Whether it is working with a municipality or neighborhood group for zoning or Design Review Board approvals, communicating with adjacent neighbors during construction, or opening a welcoming community in which residents will enjoy living, we strive to be a positive addition to the greater neighborhood and surrounding community.
What advice would you give someone looking for a career in development?
Two things: I would start in a financial role that sees a lot of deals. Ultimately, this is a business and the financial element is the universal language that binds all parties involved. Secondly, I would make friends with your construction team because they can teach you a whole lot and keep you out of trouble. And perhaps most importantly, it will create a much more enjoyable work environment. A happy team is a successful team, and this industry likes to reward and replicate that success.
LMC is a very special place to work, largely because of the special people who work here. Our company culture is infused with spirit, enthusiasm, passion, and vitality. Thank you for being an amazing example of that, Marshall!
Above all else, we are committed to quality, communication, and integrity. This applies to the communities we build and lease, and to the relationships we have with our residents and each other.
