Associate Spotlight: Melissa York, Community Manager

A 15-year veteran of the multifamily industry, Melissa York has worn a number of hats since joining the LMC team in November of 2018. A self-proclaimed bookworm, thrill-seeker and “walking conundrum,” York has worked on the IT help desk, and also as a software transition advisor, takeover team associate and currently is the community manager of Aria at Millenia. York, who has a psychology degree from the University of Central Florida, also has served as a help resource for fellow managers and a cultural ambassador for LMC.

What is your official title and job description, and how long have you been with LMC?
I am the community manager of Aria at Millenia and I also have the honor of being a cultural ambassador for LMC, as well. While I have only been with LMC a little over a year, joining this company felt like coming home.

What is your favorite aspect of your job?
My favorite part of being a community manager is helping to cultivate talent and further the careers of my teammates. While I love killing it on financials and operations, I find that one of the most rewarding things is helping and watching others grow.

What has been your biggest challenge as a community manager?
I think that the biggest challenge with being a manager is sometimes having to step back and let others learn through mistakes and struggles. I always want to help, but sometimes it is best to let others work through problems and figure it out for themselves.

What is your favorite LMC Core Value?
Always do the right thing for the right reason.

If you could have a superpower, what would it be and why?
I think I would love the power to make everyone laugh. I know that sounds silly, but laughter is great medicine, and everyone experiences hardships. Making people laugh helps them to heal.

What is the coolest place you’ve traveled?
Hawaii. My husband and I marveled at a meteor shower at the peak of Haleakala, from above the clouds, then watched the sunrise and biked down from the top through a eucalyptus forest. It was a surreal experience.
